A fairly common job interview question is, "Who is your hero, and why?"

The intent of this question is to find out more about you -- your character, personality, and values. If you anticipate this question and prepare your answer in a way that shows the traits you most admire in others -- and more importantly, that you have in common with them -- you'll turn this question into another great opportunity to blast your competition out of the water!

But there's a right way, AND a wrong way to answer this question.

Here's the best way to develop your answer.

First, decide which personal traits would be best to highlight for the position. For example, if you're applying for a job as a firefighter or police officer, you'd want to highlight traits such as courage and integrity.

Next, craft your answer to include the traits you want to highlight.

It might not be fair, but this interviewer may think you are a jerk for admiring Lance! Do you think she's going to hire a jerk?

People have opinions about people they think they know. You won't know what those opinions are. So the safest bet is to name a hero they can't possibly know or object to.

"My hero is my father. He taught me to always do the right thing; to value others and help them whenever I can; to plan ahead, work hard and do my best in any situation; to be a lifelong learner; to smile and keep a sense of humor even when things get tough; and to love, support and protect my family."

I Have Cured My Type 2 Diabetes - A1c Around 5 and Normal Reading in the Low 80's and No Meds!

I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes about 10 years ago. At first I just listened to my doctors that told me there was no cure for diabetes and I could treat my diabetes with diet, exercise and pills and live a normal life. The Doctors sent me to Diabetic schools, one that taught us what Diabetes is and how best to treat and live with it. Another doctor taught nutrition, mostly low fat eating and the best way to eat as a Diabetic.

One of the things the schools taught me was that Type 2 Diabetes is a progressive disease and things would continue to get worse and worse, so they would continually changes my medications.

Just like the doctors said, as the years went on, my blood sugar went up and up so they increased my meds. Not Satisfied with what I was taught at the schools I went to, I set out to do my own research. Things I learned were a bit scary, like all the drugs have bad side effects, even death as they kill off organs. That once you reach the limit (Maximum Dose) of one drug they have to switch to another drug until it is no longer useful. They keep this up until they run out of drugs to switch to. This usually happens in 1-20 years. Then there is not much they can do.

I also learned that any blood sugar reading over 140 is harmful and that an average reading of 139= an A1C test of 6.9 that is why you want your A1C under 7.

And that Diabetes has horrible side effects that include but not limited to:

Blindness Kidney Failure Liver Failure Amputations Stokes Nerve Damage Heart Attacks Death

If you can keep your blood sugar under 140, your A1C under 7 and keep an active life style you should be fine for a while. But time and Diabetes march on and you can end up with these complications, unless you die from something else before they set in. So the way I see it, the only way to not get any of these complications or dying a slow horrible death was to get rid of this debilitating disease that they said has no cure.

For the last 10 years or more I started reading anything I could on diabetes. I found out that a cure was developed and our government paid them 30 million dollars to keep if off the market. People are being cured of type 2 diabetes every day.

After 10 years of research and many interviews with many doctors and healthcare professionals I have finally cured my diabetes.

What do I mean by "I Cured My Diabetes?" Before I was cured, here is what I had.

After 10 years and eventually reaching my Maximum Dose of Glyburide and Glucophage (metformin) plus Lisinopril for High Blood pressure and Lovastatin for high cholesterol here is where I was at:

I had Morning mg readings of 220-250mg. I have what is called the Dawn Syndrome, which means my blood sugar reading was high in the mornings (dawn) and would come down during the day. Daily I would get my mg down to about 110-120mg My A1C tests were around 6.7 to 7.4 (testing twice a year) My blood Pressure was around 140' over 90's. My Cholesterol was in the 300's I tired easily. I had bad days where I just did not feel like doing anything, I had low days where my mg was below 70 and I felt real light headed and faint.

Remember all this is while taking the maximum allowable drugs.

Now that I am cured here is where I am.

Morning reading of 80s-90s Daily reading around under 100 Average reading a round 90 A1C of around 4.7 - 5 Blood pressure of 120's over 70's Cholesterol in the 200s
All this without any drugs, no meds of any kind, and with out eating a restrictive diet. I eat a normal healthy diet. I don't workout at gyms or even a home gym, which would be beneficial to overall health, but I am active. Now I have a lot of energy.

I am not a Doctor or health care professional in anyway, but with those numbers, I believe it would be hard for anyone to test me and say I have Diabetes. I may still have the underlying cause (I don't know) but, any complications I have will be minimized and I should be able to live a full healthy life.

The best part is, not only did I cure my Diabetes, but my wife, my sister and a couple of friend's have also cured their Diabetes with the information from When Health Matters.

UPDATE: Now that I am cured I am eating a normal good healthy diet, at least most of the time, but I do still indulge on things like pancakes, pizza and fried Shrimp! It is so good to be able to eat again.

UPDATE 6-15-08: I had to change my morning and daily reading as for the last month or so I have been in the 80;s morning and afternoons. My condition just keeps getting better.

Use this sample as a template, and change the relevant portions of it to fit your own skills, experience and interests. Customize it, and send it out a week or ten days after you send out every resume, to each company that you've applied to. Following up is a skill that many people fail to learn, and it can make all the difference in getting an interview. Experiment with it, put sentences and paragraphs into your own words, and make it read like you wrote it. Don't get the impression that the letter must be used "as is" without changes. It is a sample, or a template if you will, and is designed to be a guide for you to follow, not the end result itself.

This sample letter can also be used when applying online through the various job bank services on the Internet. They all have a place for a resume and cover letter. A week or ten days after applying, it doesn't hurt to apply again, using the sample as a guide in the space normally reserved for a cover letter for your second application.

In addition to the follow up letter, your personal marketing toolbox should include other essentials. These should include a well written resume, plenty of copies on good quality paper, a sample cover letter you can use for customization, copies of your reference sheet, a salary history, plain paper photo copies of letters of recommendation from previous employers, a sample thank you letter to use after the interview, and a job acceptance letter template you can use when you get hired. You'll also need to practice your interviewing skills. Sending a thank you letter is as important as interview preparation. But they're tough to write, so people either tell themselves that not sending one doesn't matter, or they procrastinate until it's too late and almost pointless anyway. But anyone who tells themselves that foregoing a fundamental rule of etiquette doesn't matter, not only taints themselves in the mind of the interviewer, but misses two additional opportunities to sell.

A thank you letter is an additional sales piece. As I've said before, you're selling a product and the product is you. So beyond the reason of etiquette, the letter sells you as a polite person who recognizes that the interviewer gave them something valuable: time and consideration.

A fundamental rule of sales is to keep the product in front of the buyer and reinforce its benefits. So beyond the etiquette, the letter gives you ample space to comment on what you liked about the company, why your skills are of benefit to them, and how much you're interested. If something wasn't tied up, or was left unsatisfactorily, you should use the space to further address the issue.

When you miss the opportunity to reinforce your skills and tie them to the job requirements, you miss a chance to sell. When you fail to address a concern or answer a question and leave it to fester in the mind of the interviewer, you've failed to overcome an objection. And if a buyer has an objection to the product, if it isn't addressed, the likelihood of the sale is slim.

The third opportunity missed by skipping the thank you letter is the chance to keep your name in front of the buyer. Read newspapers? Watch TV? See the same ads over and over and over again? It's somewhat the same principle - if you keep your name in front of the hiring authority, they're more likely to remember you.

Thank you letters are one of the reasons it's important to take notes during an interview. Not only does it show good attention to detail, it saves you from having to scrunch your face up trying to remember some of the information you learned about the company and position during the interview. Because if you met with three separate people during one visit to the company, that's three thank you letters....three different thank you letters.

So let's look at how to create one of these so that it becomes a less odious task.
First paragraph Open with the obligatory thank you and include how you enjoyed the meeting. Say why. Maybe the people you met were exceptional. Perhaps their company philosophy was exactly what you had hoped for. Or they need to overhaul a department and you can't wait to sink your teeth into it because that's what you've got a stellar track record of doing. It doesn't matter. Pick something out, and put it down. But make it real. Second paragraph What took place during your interview? Pull out a piece of information that pleased you, say what it was, and tell them why. For instance: I was particularly pleased to find that X company/the opportunity/your management style has/was/is/does whatever. This is exciting because...... . You can expand on whatever it is for a few sentences by elaborating: how it relates to something you've experienced and liked -- or didn't like. Discuss a particular aspect of the job you find appealing and reiterate why you'd be successful at it or how long you've been performing it or how similar it is to something you've done in the past. Third paragraph You can add a similar paragraph if the second was fairly short. Or you can wind it up if it was a bit lengthy. If there was something that came up that needed clarification or about which they were dubious, address it and clear it up here. Fourth paragraph Wind it up. Re-iterate your interest. Be enthusiastic! Leave the job speak behind. If you really want to be hired, let your interest shine through. There's nothing wrong with coming right out and saying, "I'd love to work with X company!"
Caution: Don't start every sentence with "I". It may be the easiest way to write the letter but it's not only repetitive, it's a turn off and egotistical. This process is about you getting a job, but it's about what they get out of it if they hire you.

If you really want the job, the letter will be easy to write because it will contain genuine impressions and sentiments. If you choose to skip the letter, perhaps you don't care if you're hired or not. But make that decision yours and withdraw from the process instead of letting the decision be made for you.
